Infrared Number Counts of AGN in the GOODS Fields

چکیده

Using the known numbers and evolution of unobscured AGN, and assuming that there is a large number of corresponding obscured AGN — as expected if AGN unification is correct — we predict the infrared number counts of AGN. These agree well with the observed GOODS Spitzer data at 3.6, 8 and 24 μm, provided that the dust content of the obscuring torus is ∼ 2x less than assumed. This strongly supports the AGN unification picture, and implies a large population of infrared bright obscured AGN at all redshifts and luminosities.

Obscured and Unobscured Agn Evolution and the X-ray Background

The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) combines deep HST and Spitzer imaging with the deepest Chandra/XMM observations to probe obscured AGN at higher redshifts than previous multiwavelength surveys. We present a self-consistent implementation of the AGN unification paradigm, which postulates obscured AGN wherever there are unobscured AGN, to successfully explain the infrared, opti...

GOODS Discovery of a Significant Population of Obscured AGN

We analysed the optical and infrared properties of X-ray sources in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), a deep, multiwavelength survey covering 0.1 square degrees in two fields. The HST ACS data are well explained by a unified AGN scheme that postulates roughly 3 times as many obscured as unobscured AGN, as are the spectroscopic and photometric redshift distributions once selec...

The deepest Herschel-PACS far-infrared survey: number counts and infrared luminosity functions from combined PEP/GOODS-H observations⋆⋆⋆

We present results from the deepest Herschel-Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) far-infrared blank field extragalactic survey, obtained by combining observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields from the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) and GOODS-Herschel key programmes. We describe data reduction and the construction of images and catalogues. In the de...

Spitzer’s Contribution to the Agn Population

Infrared selection is a potentially powerful way to identify heavily obscured AGN missed in even the deepest X-ray surveys. Using a 24 μm-selected sample in GOODS-S, we test the reliability and completeness of three infrared AGN selection methods: (1) IRAC color-color selection, (2) IRAC power-law selection, and (3) IR-excess selection; we also evaluate a number of infrared excess approaches. W...

A Backward Evolution Model for Infrared Surveys: the Role of Agn- and Color-ltir Distributions

Empirical “backward” galaxy evolution models for infrared bright galaxies are constrained using multi-band infrared surveys. We developed a new Monte-Carlo algorithm for this task, implementing luminosity dependent distribution functions for the galaxies’ infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and for the AGN contribution, allowing for evolution of these quantities. The adopted SEDs take...
